Luther students are creating museum exhibits

22 Luther College students are helping to create museum exhibits as part of their "Intro to Museum Studies" this semenster.

Luther museum studies instructor Destiny Crider has partnered the students with area museumes this semester.

Two groups have been assigned to the Porter House Museum and are teamed with the current collections manager and Luther alumna Emily Mineart.  One group has been preparing a portable exhibit that recreates the photographs of Adelbert Porter.  The other group is preparing an educational kit on butterflies based on the museum's butterfly collection.

These projects will be featured at the Porter House's Christmas Open House from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

A third group has been working with Alison Dwyer of the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum to design a display on Norwegian woodcrafts. The display will be installed at the Gunderson Clinic in Decorah later in December.

The last two groups are developing exhibits for the Luther campus.  One group is working with Luther Archives to create a display about sororities at Luther, to be displayed in Preus Library.  The other group is using materials from the Luther anthropology and ethnography collection of Zulu daily life at the turn of the century. This will be installed in the display case on the first floor of the F.W. Olin Building later in December.
           
The museum studies minor introduces students to and familiarizes them with the historical and theoretical foundations of contemporary museums. Students also learn practical skills and knowledge needed to work in today's museums and other cultural institutions.
