University of Virginia English professor Mark Edmundson will lecture at 6:30 p.m. Thursday on the topic "What is a College Education For?"
Thursday's lecture in room 206 of Valders Hall is one of two lectures Edmundson will give. He will also lecture at 7:00 p.m. Friday on "What Am I Supposed to Do After I Graduate?" That lecture will also be held in room 206 of Valders Hall. Both lectures are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Edmundson believes that powerful, strong teachers making students rethink who they are and what they might become is what real education is all about. His lectures explore the value of a college education and discuss how education is a privilege that should not be taken for granted.
Edmundson is the best-selling author of 10 books including, "Why Teach?" "Teacher: The One That Made The Difference," "Why Read?" "Literature Against Philosophy, Plato to Derrida: A Defence of Poetry" and "Towards Reading Freud: Self-Creation in Milton, Wordsworth, Emerson, and Sigmund Freud."
