The world famous Decorah bald eagle webcam will be back in full operation soon--perhaps as early as a week or two.
Raptor Resource Project has finished installing a camera and microphone at the bald eagles' new nest, located about 500 yards from the first nest. The Decorah bald eagles built the new nest for this year's hatching season. Interestingly enough, when their three chicks fledged, the parent bald eagles returned to the first nest.
Which nest will they use for this season's egg laying? With the installation of a camera and microphone at the new nest, it won't matter. Conduit was laid to the new camera and cable was run back to the shop where the camera cables for the first nest terminated. Now Raptor Resource volunteers will be able to switch to either nest this season.
The Decorah bald eagles were first profiled in 2008 on a PBS "Nature" documentary called "American Eagle." Raptor Resource Project then fed live video of the nesting eagles to the RRP website. By 2012 250 million people were watching the bald eagles, making the project the most heavily viewed webcam of all time.
