Decorah Social Security Office is cutting its hours

Posted: Sun, Sep 29, 2013 8:58 PM

Effective next Monday, October 7th, the Decorah Social Security office will reduce its operating hours to three hours per weekday.

The new office hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Monday through Friday.  This change will allow employees, who will continue to work their regular hours, to complete interviews and claims work without using overtime.  The office hours are being reduced because Congress significantly cut Social Security's administrative budget.

Social Security officials are stressing that the public can find many services on-line.  People age 18 and older may sign up for a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.  With a my Social Security account, Social Security beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income recipients can now access their benefit verification letter (which serves as proof of income), payment history, and earnings record instantly using their online account.  Social Security beneficiaries also can change their address and start or change direct deposit information online.  If not receiving benefits, people age 18 and older who sign up for a my Social Security account can go online to get a personalized Social Security Statement, secure and convenient access to their earnings and benefit information, and estimates of future benefits.  In addition, the portal also includes links to information about other online services, such as applications for retirement, disability and Medicare.

Many Social Security services also are conveniently available by dialing our toll-free number,  1-800-772-1213.   People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call our TTY number, 1-800-325-0778.
