It's a sign of fall--Decorah bald eagle D1 is beginning to head south to Decorah from its summer lodgings in Hudson Bay, Canada.
The bald eagle has a transmitter attached to its leg, which allows Raptor Resource Project volunteers to keep track of its movements.
For the second summer in a row after the transmitter was installed, researchers were able to discover that D1 headed north into Canada for the summer.
Says Raptor Resource Project Director Bob Anderson, "Who would have ever guessed that a young eagle from NE Iowa would spend its summer months this far to the north? Will she return to Decorah and when? Each morning I receive the gps data from Argos. Logging on to this data and entering it in to Google Earth is like opening a new birthday present every morning. Our Decorah fledged bald eagle wanderings have been nothing short of amazing."
