Winneshiek County supervisors have signed a proclamation declaring October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The proclamation was written by the Winneshiek County Celebration of Life, a local group that raises funds to help women who have cancer.

WCCOL board president Margaret Walter says the group has served 775 women in the past 15 years.  WCCOL board member Patty Casterton says the group is "a grass roots program" aimed at helping women in Winneshiek County.

Winneshiek County Celebration of Life provides free mammograms to qualifying women.  It has also expanded to take on several new programs, including a gas card program that helps pay the expenses of women who must travel to receive cancer treatments.

The WCCOL's annual fundraiser will be Monday, October 14th, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Elks Club in Decorah.
