Freeport Trail project clears a big hurdle towards getting a $100,000 REAP grant

A committee of the Iowa DNR has given tentative approval to a $100,000 REAP grant for the Trails From Freeport project.

A DNR spokesperson says the grant (which will officially be given to the City of Decorah) will be made formal after approval from the Natural Resource Commission (NRC) on October 10th.

Decorah City Administrator Chad Bird and Decorah Parks and Recreation Director Andy Nimrod appeared before the committee on Tuesday and were successful in persuading the group to recommend the grant award.

Winneshiek County officials will appear before the same DNR committee on Wednesday to state their case for a county grant, but those grants will also need to be approved by the NRC on October 10th.
