Official results in Tuesday's eight-county referendum on whether to renew a levy for the NICC district won't be available until later this month, but preliminary figures show the renewal received 78 percent approval. There were 4,760 votes in favor of renewing the levy and 1,340 against,
NICC President Liang Chee Wee said, "On behalf of the faculty, staff, trustees and, most importantly, the students of NICC, I express a sincere gratitude to our district voters for supporting our levy request. This critical investment allows NICC to continue to provide quality education and training to our students, which in turn enables them to pursue family-sustaining careers. NICC students' success also impacts the vitality of the communities in which they live."
The 20¼-cent levy has been in effect since 1966 when community colleges were created. It is not a new levy and the amount has not changed. Voters in the college's district last approved this levy in 2003.
