Winneshiek County has over 1,000 miles of road. Of that figure, over 800 miles are gravel roads.
It's the job of the Winneshiek County Engineer's Office to figure out how to keep all 1,000 miles in drivable condition. This is done by preparing a five-year construction plan.
Winneshiek County's 2014-2018 Construction Plan has a total of 41 road projects scheduled. 15 of those projects are scheduled for FY 2014. Six of those projects involve replacing bridges, including projects on Trout Run Road, Pole Line Road and Middle Ossian Road.
The number of projects and the project priorities are always being adjusted as needed.

County supervisors and County Engineer Lee Bjerke say the secret to getting more road projects scheduled is getting the state legislature to approve a higher gasoline tax. That would raise more money, which then would be sent to the county, allowing it to tackle more road projects.
