Decorah High School wins the Challenge Cup for a fifth time

For the fifth time in the last six years, Decorah High School has won the Class 3-A Challenge Cup.  The award measures success of students in academics, fine arts and athletics in comparison to other schools throughout the state.  The latest award covers the 2012-2013 academic year.

"After an outstanding year both for our fine arts and athletic programs, we are extremely proud to win again for our community, school district, teachers, coaches and most importantly our students," said Decorah High School Activities Director Adam Riley.  "The fact that athletics, music and speech are included in the scoring process make this award a very true reflection upon the success of all students in our entire activities program and the excellent community support we receive."  

The competition, sponsored by the Iowa High School Sports Network and Bank Iowa, is a statewide scoring system based on the performances of students in competition, on the stage and in the classroom. Points are assigned for every activity in which a school reaches a state competition, advances in a state competition, receives division I ratings and earns academic recognition from either the IHSAA, IGHSAU, IHSSA, and IHSMA.

For the third time in the last six years Decorah High School not only scored the most points in Class 3A, but had the most points of any school in the state with 1,265 points.  This broke the previous records of 1,260 and 1,185, which were set by Decorah High School in the 2011-2012 and 2009-2010 school years.   

The school will receive the trophy and a $1,500 check from Bank Iowa to recognize the achievement at an awards assembly that will occur at a later dates sometime during the next month.
