Walking school bus volunteers needed

Posted: Sun, Aug 4, 2013 10:08 PM

With the first day of school just around the corner, Northeast Iowa RSVP is looking for volunteers age 55 and older who are interested in serving as walking school bus "drivers."  The volunteers will take turns walking with the children to and/or from school.  The Walking School Bus provides safety for the children while providing exercise for both the child and volunteer.

Currently, there is a need for before school volunteers on the "Oak Street Route," which will start in the Pershing Street and East Broadway Street area and go to John Cline.   Volunteers for this route are especially needed on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Substitutes are also needed for the other days of the week.

There is also a need for after school volunteers on the "Oak Street Route" and on the "Goose Island Route," which will start at John Cline School and go to the Goose Island area.

The RSVP program is seeking volunteers that are willing to rotate with other volunteers on these walking school bus routes.  As a volunteer, you can determine what day you will walk and if you need to be gone for an extended period of time, a sub volunteer will take your place.  Plans are for the children to walk all year long with the exception of very cold or stormy days.

If you are interested in being a Walking School bus volunteer, please call Kathy at the RSVP office which is located at the Decorah Public Library, 382-3717.  If you are a parent who would like more information on having your child walk with the Walking School Bus, please call Ashley Christensen at Upper Explorerland, 382-6171.
