City and county police are warning the police about a new scam—this one targeting small business owners.
A caller tells a small business owner they have a past due bill or the hook up of a GPS device on their meter. They say the business has a short time to pay the bill or the meter will be disconnected.
The caller then suggests getting a prepaid debit card from Wal-Mart. Once the owner purchases the card, they are instructed to call back with the card information—and the scammers take the money.
Police say you should call your electric company on your own to check their records about your bill. Do not call the phone number given by the caller—that number helps the callers to carry out the scam.
