Do you have kids? If so, you know how frustrating it can be at times to be a parent. "Pick up your clothes." "Stop hitting your sister." "No, you can't have ice cream."
It takes a lot of energy to raise a child. Maybe that's why the task falls to younger people, for the most part. You worry about their health. You worry about their grades. You worry about how they're fitting in with other kids at school.
And then one day you're in a show barn at the Winneshiek County Fair and your kid is not only not goofing off, they're doing better at showing their pig or cow or steer than you could ever hope to do.
Where did all of this come from? When did your kid stop being someone you had to tell, "Don't put that in your mouth" and start being someone with their own talents and such a sense of confidence.
And when your kid's name is called out as a winner at 4H/FFA judging, you are so proud, it's hard to spit out the words "I'm so proud of you."
What do you know--your kid has grown up to be a pretty good young adult.
And that's why the Winneshiek County Fair continues to be such a favorite event for all the people involved.
