UPDATE: Emergency Operations Center has opened

Winneshiek County and City of Decorah officials have opened the Emergency Operation Center to handle issues caused by the weekend flooding.

City and county officials say everything is dependent on whether any additional rainfall is received.  Emergency Management is in contact with the LaCrosse National Weather Service on a constant basis.  No sandbagging is occurring at this time.

The ground is saturated, so any additional rainfall will lead to run-off and a high potential of flash flooding.  All citizens need to avoid sight-seeing or checking of water levels.  Say EOC officials, "Please allow emergency responders to convey this (flooding) information to you."

Authorities are asking you not to be traveling on the roads. You will be putting yourself at increased risk. Be aware of the increased potential for mudslides, uprooted trees, and debris on the roads with the saturated grounds and running water.

Do not drive into running fast-flowing water over roadways. It takes only a few inches of water to wash a vehicle off the road.  Do not drive around barricades as they are placed for your safety.
