"Project Care" helps seven foster care kids face life after high school

Posted: Tue, Jun 18, 2013 5:03 PM
Part of Project Care is a yearly graduation party for foster kids

Project Care was founded three years ago at First Lutheran Church as a way to help local teenagers who were not only graduating from high school, but who were also "aging out" of Iowa's foster care system.

The project helps equip each young high school graduate's apartment or dorm room with all of the basic essentials like bedding, towels, and kitchen items. It is also a priority to furnish TV's, microwaves, and laptop computers for each graduate, many of whom are continuing their education and need a computer in order to compete on an equal footing as other students.

This year's project is helping seven local students.  "We hope that they felt the compassion of our whole community," stated Pastor Melissa Bills.
