Winneshiek County supervisors gave a sympathetic ear Monday to Jim and Brenda McCaffrey when the McCaffreys met with supervisors to discuss the condition of Twin Springs Road leading to the restaurant.
The McCaffreys want the county to consider resurfacing Twin Springs Road from the end of the City of Decorah's paved street to at least the end of the restaurant driveway. They have gotten estimates of $106,000 to paved the road with asphalt or $47,000 to lay down rock and a sealant.
County Board Chair John Logsdon agreed that the restaurant "is a pretty big asset to the community." Winneshiek County Development Executive Director Randy Uhl, who appeared before supervisors in support of the request, said Dolce Vita is "a destination restaurant." The McCaffreys estimate that 65 to 70 percent of their customers are from outside Winneshiek County.
Supervisors agreed to have Iowa DOT officials put out a traffic counter. The supervisors will tour the road in person next week. One option discussed by supervisors was a voluntary special assessment that would enable the McCaffreys to share in the cost of the road project.
