Downtown Decorah flower basket program starts its 18th year

Posted: Mon, May 27, 2013 5:16 PM

City of Decorah workers and volunteers from the Downtown Decorah Betterment Association have set out flower baskets along Water Street, College Drive and other areas in Decorah's business district.

It's the 18th year for the program, which is run by Downtown Decorah Betterment Association, with funding help from the Self-Supporting Municipal Improvement District.  All of the funding for the program comes from these private sources--there are no general fund city property taxes used.

Now that the flower baskets are up, three teenagers will water the baskets in the morning, while a rotating team of volunteers will do the watering at night.  The flower baskets--over 200 in all--were grown by Decorah Greenhouses.
