Just as downtown Decorah began to fill with the traffic of high school graduation attendees Sunday afternoon, the Decorah Fire Department was also rushing to a house fire at 606 East Main.
The house was filled with heavy smoke upon the arrival of firefighters at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. However, no one was home at the time the fire started.
There was fire and water damage to one room of the home and smoke damage to the rest of the home. The cause of the fire was determined to be unattended cooking on the kitchen stove.
The Decorah Fire Department was assisted by Decorah Police, Winneshiek County Sheriff's Deputies, the Iowa State Patrol, Winneshiek Medical Center Paramedic Service, Alliant Energy, Black Hills Energy and the American Red Cross..
