A continued decline in nitrates in the City of Decorah's water supply shows that efforts to curb fertilizer runoff may be paying off.
The just-released 2013 Water Quality Report for the City of Decorah shows nitrate levels that range from 1.4 to 5.7 parts per million. 2011's samples showed an average of 8.2 parts per million, while last year's report showed 6.4 parts per million. The highest level of nitrate that is allowed in drinking water is 10.0 parts per million.
Other tests for minerals such as lead, copper and chlorine in the drinking water all showed levels within allowable ranges.
