A female Luther College student was assaulted near Dunning Springs last week. She was not injured because the attacker ran off when a nearby group of people started making noise.
But in the wake of the incieent, Decorah Police are sharing some tips that "will not eliminate all potential risks, but can help to minimize (them)"
- Try not to walk alone--especially at night
- Stay alert and awake of your surroundings. Don not wear headphones, ear buds or other devices that might obstruct your hearing
- Walk in well-lit and well-traveled areas as much as possible
- Carry a cell phone and be aware of where you are so you can give 9-1-1 directions, if necessary
- Wear comfortable shoes and clothing that won't limit your ability to run.
- If you are traveling alone, let someone know when you expect to arrive at your destination and which route you plan to take.
- Limit the uses of chemicals that might reduce your awareness
- Well before you get into your car, put your car keys in your hand so you will not have to fumble with getting them out of your pocket, purse or backpack
- Just before you get in your car, check the interior--especially the back seat
- After you get in your car, keep your car doors locked while driving
- If you see someone who might be in trouble, CALL THE POLICE!
