Improvements are being made to fish habitat at Lake Meyer

Posted: Sun, May 5, 2013 5:08 PM

Anglers at Lake Meyer have some new areas in which to try their luckthis fishing season. The Winneshiek County Conservation Board and the Iowa DNRhave added a number of fish habitat improvement structures to Lake Meyer.

The structures consist of bundled cedar trees.  They arestrategically dropped in locations across the lake to create resting and hidingplaces for fish.  This year over 200 individual trees were placed in sixlocations ranging in depth from six to 20 feet.

The trees used in the placements were removed from landsbeing managed for prairie and pasture that were threatened by cedar treeencroachment.

The Conservation Board and DNR also placed cedar habitatstructures in Lake Meyer in 2007, 2008, and 2011. Maps showing locations ofthose placements are currently available at www.winneshiekwild.com. The newhabitat placements sites will be added to the current maps as soon as possible.
