The Decorah Lions Club is supporting the work of the Spinal Cord Injury CAN Foundation started by former Luther College football player Chris Norton.
Lions Club president Karl Hendrickson has presented a check to Chris Norton for SCI CAN. Norton spoke to the Lions Club and said that before his injury nothing came easy for him, he had to work hard for what success he was able to achieve in academics and athletics. That same attitude has continued during the last three years. He currently spends thirty hours each week in therapy.
One thing he said that he has learned is that "Life is about Responses, not Circumstances".
After his surgery he was able to shrug his shoulder. At one time he thought he felt movement in a big toe but a doctor told him that it was probably a "phantom" movement, sometimes patients want to progress so badly that they imagine certain movements. Less than a week later, Norton showed a nurse that he could move that toe and started referring to the doctor as "Dr. Phantom."
Another doctor told him, "You are going to beat this. I'm Dr. Georgia, I'm from Wyoming and I don't lie." Both experiences inspired Norton to succeed.
NCAA insurance has provided for much of Norton's care, but Norton soon realized that many other people dealing with similar injuries do not have the resources to help with their recovery. He formed the Chris Norton Foundation to provide funding for equipment and therapy for spinal cord injury patients.
