Maria Hendrickson received her award certificate from Invent Iowa coordinators Leon Lueck and Jean Oberbroeckling.

North Winneshiek 4th grader Maria Hendrickson has been selected as one of six Iowa Merit Inventors in the 2013 Invent Iowa Meritorious Scholarship Competition.

She has received a $100 cash prize and a $500 scholarship to the College of Engineering at University of Iowa or Iowa State University.

Maria was one of 36 Iowa students chosen from around the state to compete in the final round.  Her invention, "Hold Your Horses," was made from recycled feed bags and consisted of adaptable reins and ergonomic squishy handles. Her hope is that the user-friendly invention will enable disabled horseback riders to participate in an activity that she loves to do – ride horses.

Maria is the daughter of Julie Strom and Karl Hendrickson.
