Girl Scout Board approves Camp Tahigwa recommendation

Camp Tahigwa will not be closing.

The Girl Scout camp in Allamakee County, which serves Girl Scouts throughout the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois district, will be utilized for day camps and overnight camps in the future, according to a vote Thursday night by the full Girl Scout Council board.

The board's recommendation calls for expanding interest in Camp Tahigwa by developing nature trails, adventure hikes and activity kits.  The recommendation also calls for Camp Conestoga to be developed as the one centrally located and modernized resident camp.  But the three other camps operated by the Council--including Camp Tahigwa--will be maintained as "outdoor experiences."

The recommendation approved Thursday night also stated, "When the specific land and facility needs for these properties have been determined, and the new resident camp project schedule is finalized, land which is not needed for the new outdoor program centers will be divested."  While this leaves open the possibility that Camp Tahigwa or one of the other two Girl Scout camps still could be sold, Girl Scout officials say it's far more likely that any property sales would be for the unused portions of the camps.
