Luther College junior Alexander Greiner of Fairfield, Iowa, has been granted a $7,500 Goldwater Scholarship based on academic merit.
He is one of 271 students to receive the scholarship out of a pool of 1,107 candidates.
The Goldwater Scholars were selected from a field of mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to $7,500 per year.
Greiner, the son of Michael Greiner, M.D., and Michele Greiner, Ph.D., of Fairfield, is majoring in biology and chemistry at Luther. He is a 2010 graduate of Fairfield High School.
Greiner aspires to earn his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees through a medical scientist training program.
