Decorah Park-Rec Department is getting ready for a prairie burn

The Decorah Parks and Recreation Department will be doing a prescribed prairie burn at the Decorah Community Prairie some day between now and April 26th.

The prairie needs fire to exist.  Burning removes old growth, controls the establishment and spread of invasive and woody plant species, puts nutrients back into the soil, and promotes the growth and abundance of native prairie grasses

If you would like to be informed of the exact date and time of the burn, please call the office at 382-4158 and your name will be put on a list to be notified. 

Weather conditions must be taken into consideration which is why we cannot announce that information at this time.
