Faith Vilardo's "Broadway Italianate"

Artwork by three Decorah High School students is currently on display at the State Historical Building as part of the annual juried Youth Art Month Exhibit sponsored by Art Educators of Iowa.

A Navajo weaving using naturally dyed yarns and handspun wool by junior Carl Iversen and "Green Sixties," a fashion design triptych by junior Sam Iverson, are part of the Youth Art Month show. "Broadway Italianate," a pen and ink drawing of the Bodensteiner home on Broadway, by junior Faith Vilardo is part of the Governor's Show.

The exhibit is open to the public throughout the month of March. Students and families were invited to attend a celebration to view the exhibit and receive awards Saturday, March 2.

Faith Vilardo's "Broadway Italianate" was also a Gold Key winner in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition sponsored by the Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa and will advance to the national competition.
Olivia Heier, a sophomore, received a Silver Key award for her Navajo weaving. Sam Iverson's "Green Sixties" and his Navajo weaving and senior Kendra Larsen's ceramic "Pre-Columbian Dragon" received honorable mentions in the competition.

The Iowa Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards ceremony will be held on April 6th at the Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. All Iowa Scholastic Art award winners (Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention) and their teachers will be honored. All award-winning artwork will be included in a virtual exhibit and will be available on DVD.
