Increased enrollment prompts Carrie Lee Middle School remodeling project

Posted: Mon, Mar 11, 2013 9:42 PM

Yes, the recently remodeled Carrie Lee Elementary School looks like it is in for a renovation.  Increased district enrollment is now dictating the need for another section of 4th grade instruction next year. That would mean six sections of both 3rd and 4th grades.

The Carrie Lee renovation would involve moving the current 3rd floor music room to the basement level, and reconfiguring the former music space into an additional classroom with adjacent space for needed "special" class needs (such as special education and ELL). The new music space, also with adjacent special class space, would displace a room currently used as a recreation and weight room.

StruXture Architects estimates the project to be well under $170,000, not including possible additional technology related costs of $10,000.  The project will go out for bid immediately, with information provided locally to encourage local contractors. A public hearing regarding the project is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., April 8 regarding the project. Approval of the bids (due April 4) is expected at the School Board meeting after the hearing.

The work will be completed this summer. Funds for the project will come from the savings in PPEL funding.
