County Board Chairman John Logsdon joked that Monday's public hearing on the county's proposed 2013-2014 budget "was the shortest public hearing in Winneshiek County history." But that's what happens when your proposed budget has a drop in the property tax levy rate.
As a result, no one spoke about the budget at the noon public hearing and it received the approval of supervisors.
The budget lowers the levy rate for rural residents by 30 cents--from $8.80 per $1,000 of assessed valuation this year to $8.50 per $1,000 of assessed valuation next year. It lowers the levy rate for property in incorporated areas (cities) by 53 cents from $7.08 per $1,000 of assessed valuation this year to $6.55 per $1,000 of assessed valuation next year
