Decorah weather observer Richard Bernatz says the 2012-2013 winter was a mild one overall.
Meteorologically, "winter" is considered the period from November 1st through February 28th. Using weather date from that period, Bernatz has concluded that this winter was ranked 90th out of 199 years in severity. Bernatz used six measures of severity—average temperature; number of days with a maximum temperature less than 32, number of days with a maximum temperature less than 10; number of days with a minimum temperature less than zero; total snowfall; and the number of days between the first and last snowfalls.
While the winter was mild overall, snowfall for the season was 30 inches, which was about two inches more than average for the period.
