When the Board of Directors of Aase Haugen Homes started talking about making changes in the management of the home, they asked several people they respected for advice. Based on those recommendations the board eventually signed a management contract with Continuum Health Care Services of Ankeny
Continuum president Tim Mortenson has been working for 35 years in the long term care industry. Around ten years ago he and a few others founded Continuum because he felt that community-based, faith-based nursing homes needed help in managing their facilities.
Continuum now manages nine nursing home and consults with 20 to 25 others. Most of the facilities are community-based nursing homes in small towns in Iowa.
Mortenson says such facilities need help because "rules and regulations are changing so fast." He says the nursing home industry is the second-most heavily-regulated industry in the country--behind only the nuclear power industry.
Continuum provides an array of services, depending on the client. It can handle human relations, nursing staffing, billing, best practices, management--it even will hold education workshops for board members, who at a community-based nursing home often work outside the health care industry.
Mortenson says Continuum has been working "side by side" with Aase Haugen Home board members since getting hired. He praises the board members for their willingness to devote so much time to making sure the home operates correctly.
