City police and Decorah school officials meet to discuss school safety

Posted: Sun, Jan 20, 2013 6:38 PM

Decorah School Superintendent Mike Haluska and Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon met Friday to review the school district's security plans at its buildings—a meeting both men say was prompted by the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.

The police and school district officials have been meeting on a regular basis, but the shootings in Connecticut brought home the importance of making sure security protocols are up to date.  Nixon says there have been significant changes in the layout of Decorah High School recently, for instance, so his department wants to make sure it is familiar with the changes.  Haluska says it's his goal to have police officers walking through school buildings—just to make themselves familiar with what happens at each building during school days.

Nixon has agreed to look at the school district's protocols and review them.  Haluska says the two groups will meet again on February 7th.
