The Decorah Community School Board toured Carrie Lee Elementary School on Monday and later discussed the security/access issues related to that building. Carrie Lee is the only school in the Decorah system where the office is on a different floor from the building access, and removed from view by the office personnel. The Board readily agreed at the Monday night meeting to move forward on installation of a camera and communication system at Carrie Lee that would be similar to those for "buzz in" entry commonly used in apartment complexes. The system installation would likely cost in the $5-7K range.
The Board then directed the school administration to immediately begin investigation of installing similar systems in all the other school buildings. All of the school building at the current time has one access point.
Other discussion was held regarding security and emergency communications. Superintendent Mike Haluska said he was meeting with Police Chief Bill Nixon this week to review the communications that would happen during a crisis.
