If your family income falls within the low to moderate income range or if you are disabled or elderly, you could qualify for help in filing your 2012 federal and state tax returns.
Trained and certified volunteers are providing the free tax preparation assistance in Allamakee, Howard and Winneshiek Counties. The service is part of the AARP or VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) programs and is coordinated by Iowa State University Extension and Northeast Iowa RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) in Decorah.
Tax services will be provided at the Decorah Public Library for Winneshiek County residents, at the Extension Office in Waukon and at the Postville Library for Allamakee County residents and the Extension Office in Cresco for Howard County residents. The free tax preparation services are provided by appointment only and open to all ages.
Taxpayers who visit a volunteer tax site should bring: 2012 wage and earnings statement (Form W-2) from all employers; interest statements from banks (Form 1099); a copy of last year's tax return; social security cards or official documentation for yourself and all dependents; and bank account and routing numbers if a refund is to be directly deposited. This year the IRS has stated that all direct deposits of refunds will take 23 days, no matter where you have your return completed.
