Winneshiek Medical Center has installed a new digital mammography system, making it the only facility in the area providing daily weekday access to advanced individualized care.
Mayo Clinic Health System radiologist at WMC Dr. Richard Remark says the new digital mammography "Can offer a mammography experience that is high-tech with a soft touch." The hospital offers biopsy options and surgical options, including breast MRI, stereotactic breast biopsies, ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, and sentinel node mapping.
The mammography suite at WMC is staffed with six technologists, including two technologists trained in mammography for women with breast implants. Mammography screenings are available at WMC for any patient, regardless of provider, and patients do not need a doctor's referral to schedule an appointment.
Digital mammography is a proven tool in early diagnosis, giving patients a much better chance of survival and leading a long, productive life. Guidelines differ, however, as to when mammograms should be done. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends women begin screening at age 50, but the American Cancer Society suggests women should begin yearly mammograms at age 40. Some organizations recommend a mammogram every year, while others recommend a screening every other year. If a woman has a family history of breast cancer, she should consult with her health care provider for advice on when to begin a baseline mammogram.
