Decorah Lions Club members have gotten some advice on that topic from Luther College Classic Department professor Dr. Phillip Freeman, whose latest book, "How to Win an Election, an Ancient Guide for Modern Politicians," is a translation of a letter written by Quintus Tullius Cicero to his brother Marcus Cicero, who was running for the position of consul (the most powerful position in Rome) in 64 BC.
Quintus' advice was true--his brother won the election. Dr. Freeman said the advice included having the backing of family and friends before running for office, for these are the people who know the candidate best and know what is hidden in the closet; promising everything to everybody, telling people what they want to hear, flattering voters shamelessly and knowing the weaknesses of the opponent and exploiting them, whether those weaknesses are financial or sexual.
Dr. Freeman will have a new book coming out next month. It is a translation of a speech by Marcus Cicero with advice on how to run a country, including corruption, taxes, war and other political advice.
