Thanksgiving might have been interesting at a gathering of Decorah football coach Bill Post's extended family.
That's because Post wasn't the only member of his family who could brag about a state championship. His nephew, Joel Lanning, was the quarterback for the Ankeny Hawks, helping to lead them to a Class 4A championship. Lanning scored the winning touchdown on a 5-yard run with 3 minutes 16 seconds left in the championship game. That gave Ankeny not only the state championship, but a perfect 14-0 record--the same record as the Decorah Vikings.
Lanning told the Ankeny Register that he was happy the Vikings also went 14-0 and won a state title: "It's a great family, I guess."
