The last time a new Multi-Jurisdiction Hazard Mitigation Plan for this area was created was following the severe weather and flooding of 2008. Now the Winneshiek County Emergency Management Commission is getting ready to write a new plan--and it's inviting the public to be a part of that process.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, through Iowa Homeland Security & Emergency Management, has awarded a grant to the Winneshiek County Emergency Management Commission to pay for hiring Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Council as the lead planner.for the project. UERPC will devote special attention to determining if new risks or hazards have been identified since the 2008 plans were approved by FEMA. Additionally more detail in the history of previous incidents that caused damage to the county, not only from floods or severe weather but also from drought.
An organizational meeting will be held at the Decorah City Hall Council Chambers at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Decmeber 4th. A lead planning committee will be selected with representatives from all of the communities and the county as well as general public, business and industry, school districts and college representatives, and special interest groups.
