The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce is switching to LED lights on poles and wreaths in the community this holiday. The previous lights used 155 watts per wreath, and the new LED lights use only one watt.
According to the Winneshiek Energy District, the new lights will save over 20,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. That translates into savings of $1,619 per holiday season and 22.6 tons fewer of green house gas emissions.
"We anticipated a lower energy usage. We didn't realize that almost the entire project's usage will be the equivalent of one old wreath." Nikki Brevig, DACC Executive Director reported. "Our goal was to invest in lighting that will last longer and use less energy."
The Chamber provides more than 150 wreaths in the downtown and West Side area. Next year the project will be expanded to Short Street. The City of Decorah's Street Department installs the lighting.
"We greatly appreciate the work the City Street Department puts into this project. They do a great job and are fantastic to work with." Brevig said. "We also thank those who have supported the project with their contributions. It's a big project that adds so much to the community during the holidays. Their support ensures it continues."
Individuals and businesses can support the project through the DACC's Adopt-a-Wreath program. A Pole Sponsor is $250, a Wreath Sponsor is $150 and $50 for a Light Sponsor. Payments can be made at the DACC office at 507 W. Water Street or online at www.decorahareachamber.com in the events section.
