The American Cancer Society is observing the 37th Great American Smokeout on Thursday, November 15th. On Monday Winneshiek County supervisors took note of the event by proclaiming next week Tobacco Awareness Week.
The Great American Smokeout encourages smokers to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By quitting--even for one day--smokers will reduce their risk of cancer and will take an important step towards a healthier life.
Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet more than 45 million Americans still smoke cigarettes.
