decorahnews.com readers have e-mailed us with several questions about Tuesday's shooting. Based on new information we've received from the Sheriff's Department, here are those answers:
1) "I'm confused--was this shooting in Calmar or in Ossian?"
Around 7:30 Tuesday morning, multiple gunshots were fired at a house near South Winneshiek High School in Calmar. Police are describing this as a "drive-by shooting." Several people were standing outside the house at the time on the shooting. They hit the ground when the shots were fired. It's not known whether the shots were aimed at the people or at the house.
The witnesses to the drive-by shooting in Calmar gave police a description of the vehicle and the driver. The vehicle then was traced to a home in Ossian, where the driver entered a shed behind a house near Ossian de Sales Church/School.
2) Why did police at first say they were looking for two suspects?
Police quickly surrounded the shed, but they weren't sure who was inside the shed--or how many people there were.
3) Why wasn't a description of the suspects issued to the public?
Again, police had the shed surrounded, but they weren't sure who was inside. At mid-morning, 23-year-old Dan Wildman of Cresco left the shed on an ATV. Police pursued Wildman into a nearby cornfield and arrested him without incident.
4) How did police determine there wasn't a second suspect?
The shed behind the house in Ossian remained surrounded by police officers. But there was a delay while authorities swore out a warrant for a search of the shed and got a judge to sign it. By that time, it was almost 2:00 p.m. A search of the shed revealed that Wildman had been in there by himself. It was at that point that police gave the "All Clear" to aea schools to end their precautionary lockdowns.
