Decorah High School Industrial Technology teacher John Condon, will be inducted into the NICC Alumni Hall of Fame on Monday.
Condon has taught for the past 13 years at Decorah High School. He earned three degrees from Northeast Iowa Community College. (NICC) and knows that sometimes the best, most enduring lessons are when students learn by doing. Condon is a 1985 Carpentry, 1993 Industrial Electrician and 1999 NICC-Upper Iowa University Industrial Technology Education program graduate who incorporates the hands-on methods he learned as a college student into teaching his own students every day. To recognize his many career and community achievements, and impact as an educator,
At Decorah High School, John incorporates ongoing hands-on projects that teach his students how to apply classroom learning into real world contexts, such as his carpentry students' construction of food booths for Nordic Fest in Decorah each year and an assignment that requires his electricity students to build a functioning AM-FM radio. He also shares with his students the high value and return on investment of an NICC education.
"I'm a huge NICC supporter and I try to steer young people there for several reasons. First, if high school students are not 100 percent sure what they want to do, NICC is a great place to start. Also, many young people don't want to go to college far away from home; they want to stay in the area. They can take their gen eds at NICC, probably stay at home and get a college education without breaking the bank," Condon said. "Attending NICC is just a wonderful thing to do."
