A Winneshiek County Sheriff's Deputy tried to stop a black pickup truck on County B-32 east of Fort Atkinson early Sunday morning because the truck had no taillights and no license plate.
The driver of the truck, 21-year-old Zach Willie of Randalia, Iowa, turned into a private driveway, went into a ditch, and then headed eastbound on B32. The deputy pursued the truck while activating his top lights and siren. The truck traveled over 90 miles an hour on the road, hitting the stop sign at the intersection with Highway 150, turning right onto Highway 150, turning erratically onto 123rd Street while failing to yield to two sheriff's cars.
The truck eventually lost control when the paved roadway turned to gravel past the 123rd Street/240th Avenue intersection. The truck entered the south ditch, hit the embankment and a fence before rolling into a dry creek bed.. Willie, who was not injured, fled on foot, but was captured a short distance away with the help of the Winneshiek County K-9.
Willie has been charged with drunk driving and with eluding officers. There were no passengers in the truck. There were no injuries to law enforcement personnel and no damage to law enforcement vehicles.
The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department was assisted by Calmar Police, Decorah Police Dispatch, Fayette County Sheriff's Department, Calmar First Responders, Winneshiek County Ambulance and Bill's Auto.
