Decorah Fire Department releases details of grass fire

Posted: Thu, Aug 23, 2012 7:16 AM

The Decorah Fire Department was called out at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday for a grass fire on property between Ranch Road and 240th Street owned by Daniel Rued.

The large grass fire had spread into a nearby wooded area.  The fire line was between three-quarters and one mile in length, spreading in all directions.  Assistance was requested from the Frankville Fire Department.  Three ATV firefighting units, two brush fire trucks and two tankers were used to extinguish the fire.  Some areas were difficult to reach and were extinguished using hand tools.  Approximately 32 acres burned.

No injuries were reported and damage was limited to grass and trees.  The fire appears to have started from the owner burning grass which then got out of control.

The Decorah Fire Department would like to remind people that although we have received a small amount of rain the conditions remain dry.  Open burning is not recommended and caution should be used if any fire is used.
