Brief but intense storm rolls through Winneshiek County Thursday evening

Conover was among the places reporting 70 mile an hour winds

A line of thunderstorms rolled through Winneshiek County around 5:00 p.m. Thursday, touching off a tornado warning.

The National Weather Service Office in La Crosse said the funnel cloud was "radar-indicated."  Severe weather spotters did not see a funnel cloud, however.

But the storm packed winds of up to 70 miles an hour in Conover and Calmar.  It also dropped hail in several locations, with the hail from one to two inches in diameter.

Just as quickly as the storm arrived, it was over, with an all-clear given 20 minutes after the tornado warning was issued.
