Alliant Energy has announced plans to spend $430 million in upgrades to its power plants in Lansing and Ottumwa over the next five years.

The projects are described as "environmental upgrades" to the coal plants.  They are part of a package of upgrades announced Thursday by the utility.  The Iowa Utilities Board has to approve the plans,

The moves will cost several billion dollars and will provide power needed to meet added demand expected over the next decade.  Customers would most likely pay annual rate increases of 2 to 4 percent because of the work.
