Montessori students experience Norwegian Camp

Posted: Thu, Jul 26, 2012 5:54 PM

Decorah area children will be celebrating the Norwegian language and culture far beyond Nordic Fest this year.  Norwegian Camp is currently in full swing at Northeast Iowa Montessori School  amidst the events of both Nordic Fest and Luther Lag.  Pictured above with several of the camp's students is Norwegian volunteer Astri Snodgrass, a 2012 Luther Graduate, and former counselor at Skogfjorden (a Norwegian Camp in Concordia Language Village).  These enthusiastic learners are broadening their knowledge of the Norwegian culture as they celebrated Juletrefest in July, learned how to make rømmegrøt and smørbrød, and will be visiting the Nordic Dancers outside the Courthouse Friday morning to learn traditional Nordic Folk Dancing!

In this, its pilot year, NEIM offered two full weeks of half-day instruction in both the Spanish and Norwegian language and culture to children ages 3-8.  Utilizing volunteers from the community, native and fluent speakers alike, students are introduced to beginning language and culture.  Our hope is to offer these open enrollment Summer Language Camps again in the summer of 2013 with the possibility of expanding the language choices offered.  To inquire or offer language request, email neimontessori@gmail.com.
