A recent Decorah High School graduate, Carolina Deifelt Streese, her father, Germano Streese, and her art instructor, Elizabeth Lorentzen, spent a 3-day weekend in New York City along with 19 other art students, parents and art teachers from across the nation courtesy of Sargent Art, an art supply company based in Pennsylvania. Sargent Art has awarded the trip for the past five years to honor students and their teachers, and to recognize the support parents and teachers give to students.
Carolina won the top award at the Art Educators of Iowa Youth Art Month Show in Des Moines in March and was awarded the trip as part of that honor. The other 19 art students were top winners in their respective states.
An award dinner was held on Friday evening, July 20 to honor Carolina and the 19 fellow award winners, their teachers, and their parents. Award winning work was displayed at the dinner and each student spoke to the group about their art work.
On Saturday the group and their Sargent Art hosts toured the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, took a walking tour of Central Park, were treated to lunch at Rockefeller Center, and enjoyed a bird's eye view of Manhattan from "Top of the Rock." They were treated to dinner at an Italian restaurant on Broadway, enjoyed the Broadway musical, The Lion King, and finished the evening with a walking tour of Times Square at night.
Sunday included a bus tour of Manhattan, a Staten Island harbor tour of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and environs, and a walking tour of the Financial District including Wall Street, Federal Hall, and the New York Stock Exchange. A visit to the World Trade Center Memorial on the site of the Twin Towers, a tour of Trinity Church which served as a triage area for victims of 9/11 following the disaster, and Trinity Chapel which served as a respite point for firefighters, police and clean-up workers in the aftermath of 9/ll, concluded the morning's activities. Lunch at a Manhattan deli rounded out the visit.
Carolina's art work, a pen and ink drawing of Hart's Tea and Tarts in downtown Decorah, and images of the other award-winning student art work will be displayed on the Sargent Art website, www.sargentart.com along with photos of the 2012 New York trip.
