Six middle school students from Decorah and three high school students from Decorah are traveling to the University of Maryland this weekend for the start of the National History Day Competition. The event will run from June 10th through the 14th.
Decorah Middle School students Loden Henning, Kalle Solberg, Katie Perez, and Katelyn Yee will be showing their documentary, "Elijah Parrish Lovejoy: America's Reaction to a Revolutionary Idea."
6th grader Kaitlyn Rooney from St. Benedict's will be showing her project, "Tinker vs. Des Moines: A Revolution in Students' Rights".
Decorah Middle School 8th grader Autumn Delong qualified with her individual documentary, "Robert Ray: A Voice for Refugees".
Three Decorah High School students--Aidan Spencer, Clara Kittleson, andLydia Hayes--will be showing their documentary chronicling the removal of the social dancing ban at Luther College during the 1960s..
Nearly 2,500 students from the United States, Europe and China have qualified for the National History Day Competition. Nearly 10,000 Iowa students competed in the program this year, with the nine Decorah students being in an elite group of just 63 Iowa students who qualified for the national competition.
