Former Calmar doctor Dennis Glawe on Tuesday accepted a plea agreement that will keep him out of jail, although he will be added to the sex offender registry.
The plea agreement centered around Glawe's relationship with a Calmar woman from February of 2009 through September of 2010. She had gone to Glawe to seek counseling because she was in an abusive marriage.
In Winneshiek County court on Tuesday, the woman said Glawe "took advantage of me" and "destroyed the person I was." Her sentencing statement said Dr. Glawe gave her 58 different medications while he was counseling her. "I hate this man for what he has done to me," she said, asking "How could he possibly do this to his own patient?"
The woman claimed that Glawe was concerned more about his reputation than he was about her and asked her to lie for him when a hearing was being held about the suspension of his license to practice medicine.
At Tuesday's sentencing, when Glawe was asked "Did you commit this crime?" he replied, "Yes, sir."
The agreement approved by the court on Tuesday will place the 62-year-old Glawe on probation for three to five years. He will also pay a $750 fine. Glawe will be placed on the sex offender registry and will undergo sex offender treatment. He is banned from having any contact with the woman or her family for five years and will pay victim restitution. He will lose his voting rights because of the felony conviction--but he will not serve any jail time. Glawe's attorney said the former doctor--who now lives in Pickwick, MInnesota--has a new life in Minnesota and "a new vision for his future."
